Four generations of Lurtons have been making wine at Château Reynier, a fortified farmhouse dating back to the 15thcentury, which was used as a stopover on the Santiago de Compostela pilgrim route. This stunning property is surrounded by 28 hectares of gentle slopes on the hillsides of Entre-Deux-Mers, across the river from Saint-Émilion. Since 1996, it is Oenologist Marc Lurton, with the help of his wife Agnès, who has been running the estate. Starting with the 2012 vintage, two big changes occur. First of all, in order to make it more marketable abroad, the wine is no longer labeled as “Entre-Deux-Mers” but as “Bordeaux Blanc”. Secondly, 10% muscadelle now forms part of the blend otherwise composed of 30% sémillon and 60% sauvignon blanc hence an enhanced aromatic profile. This wine displays overwhelming but ever so youthful and crisp sauvignon-blanc aromas: juicy gooseberry and citrus fruit, notably grapefruit, plus a hint of grassiness. On the palate, the wine is well-balanced. Zesty lemon and lime bring the acidity to life on the mid palate then juicy white peach softens it in the finish. This is a wine to be enjoyed as an aperitif or in accompaniment to light fish and summer dishes.
