This is an invitation-only event for clubs and societies challenged in writing by the East India Club Yacht Squadron.
The Newman VC Trophy is named in honour of the East India Club’s late member Lt-Col Charles Newman VC who led the Commandos on the St. Nazaire Raid, a daring operation known in Britain as the “Greatest Raid of All” in which among other things five Victoria Crosses – the highest gallantry award that can be conferred on a British citizen – were won in a matter of hours.
Colonel Newman is the only member of the East India Club’s four known Victoria Cross holders to be awarded the medal for action on or from water.
The event was won in 2019 by the Chelsea Arts Club, in 2018 by The Army & Navy Club, in 2017 by East India Club Yacht Squadron and in 2016 by Royal Automobile Club.
The trophy will be awarded formally at a Laying Up Supper to be held at the East India Club, 16 St James’s Square, London, with return of the trophy expected by Easter 2021.
